• Quote of the Day

“Surely the reason Christ said, ‘Father, forgive them,’ was because even in that terrible hour He knew that this was the message He had come through all eternity to deliver.”
    —Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

New Era Survey on Dating

The New Era is conducting an online survey on dating, asking such questions as “In your opinion, what is the difference between dating and hanging out?” and “In your opinion, what makes somebody a ‘boyfriend’ or ‘girlfriend’?” So, teens, voice your opinions. Let the New Era know what you think about dating.

Music Download: Steadfast and Immovable

The New Era home page has posted MP3 recordings of the song whose sheet music appears in the October issue. The song, “Steadfast and Immovable,” can be downloaded in two formats: with vocals and without vocals. It sounds like a hymn and could be used in Sunday meetings or Mutual (especially since it matches this year’s Mutual theme). Having such songs available for download is a good development and, hopefully, will become a regular occurrence.

Image Gallery: Pray Always

The Ensign has posted an image gallery based on the article “Pray Always” from the October issue. The article is a collection of artworks and captions related to prayer. This image gallery allows you to see them all in a similar format and size. Hopefully the Ensign will continue to post such image collections.

New Era Special Issue Promotional Video

The New Era has posted a video promoting its October issue, which is a special issue on the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet. Check out the video, and get a glimpse of this special issue.

Five Scriptures That Will Help You Get through Almost Anything

In this month’s New Era, John Bytheway offers scriptural answers to the question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The article is called “Five Scriptures That Will Help You Get through Almost Anything,” and here is the list:

  1. We Know That God Loves His Children! (1 Nephi 11:17)
  2. We Know That God Allows Evil to Exist in the World (Moses 7:26–33)
  3. Our Work Is Not Finished! (Alma 14:13)
  4. The Atonement Is Not Just for Sinners (Alma 7:11–12)
  5. One Day, the Lord Will Reveal All Things (D&C 101:32–36)

Read the full article, and see whether you agree with his interpretations of these scriptures and his arguments regarding how they answer the question posed above. It’s a different sort of article for the New Era—it’s long, dense, and chock-full of additional scriptural references. In any event, it’s well worth the read.

Coming to Church, Becoming Converted

This month’s Ensign contains a short article that gives six tips for helping investigators when they come to church. In “Coming to Church, Becoming Converted,” Dale M. Valentine (a former mission president who has passed away since writing this article) describes an experience in which he had the opportunity to ask seven converts about the thing that most contributed to their conversion. All of them said it was when they attended church. When he asked them what impressed them and what members could do to help investigators, their comments fell into the following categories:

  • Be united and dedicated.
  • Focus on people.
  • Teach investigators what to expect.
  • Live your religion.
  • Share unique truths.
  • Bear your testimony.

It should be noted that under “share unique truths” they added that we should keep it simple—always good advice.

Recognizing the needs of investigators and trying to meet them is a challenge and duty we should all take seriously when the opportunity arises.

Our Creative Friends Slideshow

The Friend’s Web site has posted a slideshow of “Our Creative Friends” from the September issue. For those unfamiliar with this feature, “Our Creative Friends” showcases children’s drawings, usually on Church-related themes, that are submitted to the Friend for publication. These drawings are now available online for the first time. Enjoy.
